How did one of my oldthreads get in the archives., when other, larger, better written ones are left to decay..??

As Chalgrish said, it's only a matter of how long a thread has been inactive. After at least 2 months, the thread is moved to the archive to prevent people and newbies to put efforts into something that is no longer active.
If someone want to continue an archived story, s/he can do so by putting a link back to the old thread.
