Azrix's guide to Sabaku no Gaara
First off, this was inspired by Jish's question about the symbol on Gaara's forehead. To begin, I'll start off with the symbol in question. Gaara of the Desert (Or Sabaku no Gaara in Japanese) was around five of six when he got the symbol on his forehead above his left eye. Because of his innability to sleep, he became mentally unstable, attacking people for minor reasons. The Kazekage, his father, sent an assassin to kill young Gaara. Because of Gaara's sand, the attack failed misserably and after Gaara unmasked the assassin, he was shocked to find that it was his uncle, Yashamaru, whom Gaara thought was the only person that loved him and didn't think of him as a monster. Contrary to what Gaara was previously told, Yashamaru told Gaara that he had never loved Gaara, and in fact hated him because he had taken his sister's (or Gaara's mother's) life during childbirth, and the assassination was requested, instead of being ordered by the Kazekage. As a last resort to kill Gaara, Yashamaru opens his vest, revealing many explosive notes attached to his chest. Before the notes exploded, Yashamaru mutters to Gaara with his last dying breath "Please die." And the notes explode. Gaara survives, his sand absording the impact. Now, he carves the kanji (or letter) on his forehead in sand, swearing to himself to "Love only himself." The symbol is actually Ai, or love. His name (meaning death), combined with the letter on his forehead, results in "Demon who loves only himself".
Now, if you don't know why Gaara can't sleep, I will explain here. Gaara is the container of the one-tailed raccoon-dog demon named Shukaku. Shukaku was sealed in Gaara during Gaara's birth, which resulted in the sacrifice of his mother's life. Because the demon will be released and destroy the entire village if Gaara was to fall asleep or become unconcious, Gaara is forced into insomnia, which caused his mental instability.
Other things about Gaara~ Gaara can control sand, some aspects of this ability are, however, not under his control at all. For instance, whenever a weapon of any kind is headed for Gaara, a wall of sand will block it, against his will, regardless of the instance. The gourd on his back is made of sand, and filled with sand that is more manipulable than what he can get from the ground. The sand in his gourd absorbs blood.
For obssessive fangirls like myself or if your just curious~ Gaara is just short of turning 13 in the show (in America). He's barely five feet tall, weighs roughly 90 lbs. His favorite food is chopped liver and salted tongue. His birthday is January 19th. His blood type is AB. He has two siblings, Temari and Kankuro, both of them older than him. I'll think of more later.

Don't look now, but I think that's a girl!
-And I'm not?
Well, technically no. You are a second of (probably a lot more than) two personalities of mine, and I take the form of an Aeuea, which are genderless. Most Aeuea consider themselves one gender or the other, for pronoun purposes, but all Aeuea are physically genderless.
-We're only Aeuea because you want to be. If I cared enough I could change that.
Aeuea makes the most sense, anyway. It stops us from changing constantly from male to female and vicey-versy.

The Chuunin Exams
The Chuunin exam is a test which is held twice every year to determine which Genins, from all around the world, are at the required skill level to become a Chuunin; as long as they have completed a minimum of 8 missions, they may enter the exam.
However, it is also held as a replacement for war amongst the Hidden Villages. Once, many great Shinobi countries were at war with each other, and many Ninja were killed as a consequence. So, the Chuunin exam was divised as way for civilians, country lords, and peoples from places without Ninja Villages to see the mightiest of the villages, and therefore, the country whose Ninja perform the best would, in theory, gain the most new and continued custom. Therefore, it is in a Village's best interest for their Shinobi to do well, as it will mean an increase in customers; and, it is of course, in the Shinobi's best interest to do well, as it will mean a promotion to a higher rank.
The country where the exam is held varies every event (however, this section will be mostly concerned with the one in Leaf Village, in which Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are participants.) Usually, the country that is hosting the event has more participants than any other. Ninjas from other Hidden Village must carry a pass with them at all times when wandering the village they are participating in.
The exam held in the Leaf Village is normally split into 3 parts; a paper test consisting of 10 questions; a race to the middle of "the Forest of Death" after fighting at least one team of opponents for their scroll; a tournament where all of the entrants fight and show their abilities. The first two are conducted one after another but the third is held a month after the completion of the second. However, if there are too many people that complete the first and second test, a set of preliminaries will be held to thin out the numbers for the real third test. In these preliminaries, each Ninja will fight a random opponent until half, or less, people are remaining.
Also, there is one more rule that applies to the exam: fighting without the consent and authorisation of the examiners or testing officers is not permitted. And if permission to fight your opponent is given, killing them is not tolerated unless otherwise stated. However, this rule does not apply for the second and third test.
