would you call the "gut feeling" a sixth sense?

More like a more-than-likely-going-to-happen guess.

The "gut feeling" comes from a paralell universe.

No I'm not kidding.

The multiverse theory consists of the idea that there are many different universes existing alongside each other, each consisting of a different might-have-been. Some are identical to ours, exept that they are ocurring later or sooner. When you have a gut feeling, it is sometimes an influence from another universe that is further along in time.

um...?

that would be cool... but my gut feeling is always right...

so... does that mean some people are better connected to their parralel selves than others?

Multiverse theory doesn't allow for misaligned timelines, though. According to the Multiverse Theory, each decision, choice, etc. creates a separate reality for each possible outcome, but all the realities are perfectly identical up to that point in time.

Yeah, my signature is a reflection of an extension of the Multiverse Theory. In my own mind I see anything and everything as possible, just not probably in this universe or possibility of the many available.

I don't get a 'gut feeling' but I occasionally have Deja Vu. I think it has to do with dreaming things before they happen, but then I forget before I wake up. Hmm... I haven't had Deja Vu in a while.

I wonder if that means your "other self" in unable to send things to you anymore. ;)

But on the other topic, I really don't believe in the Multiverse Theory. If it were every moment will create countless other universes each of them will also create countless others and so on.

But seeing you can get to the end result taking different paths, the end result will be the same and not creating another universe. It is the throwing a stone into a river idea, you will cause a temporary disruption in the river at the point of contact, but after a few moments the river will be the same without changing.

Well, yeah, the water may return to what it was, or maybe the rock sticks up out of the water and causes endless more ripples as the current pulls it the water past it.

What you're saying is true, and Multiverse allows for it. Different universes that have split off from each other can rejoin and be the same from there on in as well as from the point of divergence on back, but it won't neccessarily happen. If the choice is do I eat a cookie or not, the two world may very well meet up again, depending on the other choices/changes that happen (of course there's always the butterfly effect to mess that up...), but what if the choice is Do I kill my wife or not? That's one set of ripples that's a lot less likely to just settle down over time. Maybe it will. What if it's do I kill teh president? What if it's do I blow up the WTC?

Meh. I use multiverse theory for writing because it makes causality and time travel a lot less troublesome. I don't have to worry about messing up the future, because as soon as I'm in the past, I'm in a different universe. Lucky me.

@Silentiea: Modern multiverse theory does.

The law of the conservation of reality says that when two universes are similar, they tend to converge, which cuts down on the number of universes. Only drastic changes remain seperate: Hitler winning WWII, for example.

I understand what vampire hunter is saying, Pebbles thrown in a river, and the river will continue to flow as if they never were... hmm.
But anyway, the gut feeling, I get some kind of feeling where you sort of know something is about to happen, like it goes quiet, but you have no idea what it will be...

Oh yea, that one.

I think the "sixth sense" fits into the ESP area. So the gut feeling will fit. But more it works into those "phychic spies" who can see things from a long way away.

Falconer, please explain how Multiverse allows for misaligned timelines.

I know, I have an example! Okay, so Hitler tried to seize control of Germany twice, and only on the second try did he succeed. He was sent to prison for a time between those two times. Well, what if he had succeeded the first time? Would World War II have started earlier? Possibly, therefore timelines would be misaligned as we would have gotten more technology earlier and rushed everything along. Theoretically of course.

That explain things enough?

That is one way, yes. Another would be the universe starting later/sooner.

As for Jish's example, the universe would only seem to be ahead. The actual dates would line up, events would just be different.

As for Falconer, according to modern Multiverse theory, all the universes that are are born of each other, so no matter when the split occurred, the timeline would match.

What I mean is that waaaaaay back when the universe started, that was an event. There was a split- one universe we come into being, another we don't for a while. This offsets the time frames without changing history.

What it offsets is the time that events take place, not the actual timelines. I can see what you mean, but I stand by my original statement: The Multiverse theory does not allow for mis-aligned timelines.

I was once talking to a physcicist (probably misspelled that) and asked him to explain quantum mechanics to me. He launched into this long, complicated explanation. At the end, I asked for the simple form. He waved his hands helplessly and said, "That is the simple form."

Moral: Quantum physics is yet to be fully explored. So questions such as this are left hanging.

The problem is we have an idea on how things work. But we can't really show how things work other than with "physics math". Which is taking formula we know start a problem and then taking things we see from experiments, then forcing the it to work out. In a term joking used "magic happens". And one big problem is our minds are too trapped into Newtonian physics, and all of those laws are thrown out when you reach a quantum level. It is quite fun.

Agreed. To both of you. However, I believe the time has come to digress, as fun as this discussion has been, we're just a tad off topic.

In case you're just joining us: The 'gut feeling' could be explicable by some odd connection you have with some parallel universe in which events occur in roughly the same way but at a different time than ours.

Or, it could mean you ate some bad Tuna. We haven't decided yet.

I have seen worse.......

Ok, back to the first topic......

I see the "gut feeling" as a program within our brains. I feel we keep all of the information we see or do within our brain in the areas we have no idea on how to reach. But this "background program" uses these experiences to work out what may happen in the near future. It is just one of the many things our mind does without the need of us starting.
