Re: Grumpy old forumers
You know what I'm tired of? Little kids or siblings who think they are the most inteligent beings in the world just because they passed the 7th grade!
Another thing (though this is already passing). All the hype about Michael Jackson's death. He was a good (not great) artist, true, but don't turn his death into a circus! We all heard of him, and we only need to be told of his death once. If you didn't hear it that time, we'll hear it at least a million other times from our friends and family, so just let it rest already!
And lastly... Schools who have enough money to buy all the sports teams brand new equipment, but can't afford the new computers or stuff for the teams that require some actual inteligence (such as SkillsUSA, FFA, or the Debate Team), which forces the under-funded groups to start fundraisers that next to none of the students know about because the school doesn't give a crap about telling anyone!

That was the movie based on the firefly show.
I really don't think I can watch Transformers. I still have the cartoon too well marked in my head.

1a.Well a lot of TV is a waist of TV........
1b. Hua........ Do I need to clear that rant off or do you need to clear it up some?
2a. That is a pain in the back side. And goes out to a lot of youngins
2b. Just wait, that is far from over. It will be like Elvis. In a couple of months you will start getting sightings. But I do agree, 90% of the news is covering it with short points to tell about the other things going on around the world.
2c. That is an old rant. Though I do agree with you on the point. The sports teams are also where the school gets a lot of its money. Go to a game buy a ticket, food, drink and stuff. I never went to a debate meet where you can buy hotdogs and soda.

Ah yes the classic challenge of "the movie never follows the ORIGINAL story line". Even so, I liked the Transformers movie just because I'm a die hard fan of giant robots. If you can put the old Transformers cartoon in the void of your mind, you'll probably enjoy the movie.

Re: Calling all science fiction lovers
That is not really what I said. I can rip the movie if you want......
To me of what I have seen of this (and the first) movie is a much overused CGI commercial for the different products the transformers change into. And for the few moments Michael Bay is able so somewhat keep the camera still, they are lingering shots on Megan Fox showing off all she can in a PG - 13 rated film.
So I see it as a "boob movie" in a long line of overused CGI films. I agree CGI can really make a movie look great, but after a while it depletes from the core of the movie. Just look and find Metropolis (the silent movie one), it has a great story, really good action for a silent movie, amazing stunts and some great effects to boot. I really think they need to come up with a new name more movies like this because "live-action" just does not fit anymore.
(I might note, I am not a fan of Michael Bay movies. When all is done, you feel like something is missing from the experence.)

Yes, I hate Big Brother, its a load of poo.
I can rant on about Irish school, well, not all of them, but mine inparticular! Its split into three parts, they can afford carpets, we have only 300 students. We are expected to keep forking out money for stupid football mathces, etc, we have been told on several occasions that the school is broke, and given lectures because the lads broke several door handles and the cheap roof tiles with a football. And my most important thing to rant about is the fact that there is no art class!!!! And there is no PE class either!!
Anyway, yes about Michael Jackson. The news will continue for many months, he was a legend to the whole world, Im not really a fan at all, but, still, we all knew him.
Also, adverts on TV! Half of them are so unbelievably stupid, I dont know what to say. Most of them have nothing to do with the product they are selling.
Another thing, ever noticed that in trailers for new films, there is usually a thing I call the "Over rated scene". Its a certain part of the film that they put in the trailer and its either the "funniest" or most "Memorable", and its alos what you will here people repeating when they talk about the film. Somthing like, oh that bit is so funny, or rememeber that bit? Let me think...The over rated part ion the transformers 2 trailer would either be the part where Sams parents are at the college and his mom says I feel smarter allready, and something about a smell, and the dad says Smells like 40000 whatever a year. Or the part at the end when the huge thing is sucking up all the sand. ANyway, made my point.
Ill probably come up with some more stuff to rant about later, lol!

Re: Calling all science fiction lovers
You apparently failed to even get the core of the movie. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is not intended to be the next deep, insightful, philosophically enhanced whatever. The entire point of the movie is to blow stuff up while giant robots duke it out in Egypt.vampirehunter42 wrote:To me of what I have seen of this (and the first) movie is a much overused CGI commercial for the different products the transformers change into. You may just as well have criticized the 1998 version of Godzilla for not being a meaningful film. If you want deep meaning, go watch My Sister's Keeper.

Re: Calling all science fiction lovers
Ok, I counted to 10 before this post.
My main problem with movies that spend more time and effort on making it look cool, are making us spend a lot of money for what you can now just buy on a gaming counsel.
I see movies like a cake:
1. Some people like the cake, and maybe some icing for extra flavor.
like some people like their movies with a lot of plot, strong acting and maybe some minor effects to bring you into the movie.
2. Some people like their cake with a single layer of icing with no need for extras like flowers and things like that.
The same with movies, some people are like above but are willing to give up some plot or acting for a heavier amount of effects.
3. And some people like their cake with a ton of icing with a bunch of extra things put on top of it adding just to the look.
And it is the same with movies, some people will look for something to look good. And care nothing about acting, plot or anything else like that.
I fit somewhere in 1 to 2, I'll be safe at saying 1.5. I need plot, and acting that is more than someone just repeating their lines.
(I don't wish to start about that Godzilla movie.........)

lol even I was a little disappointed with it.vampirehunter42 wrote:(I don't wish to start about that Godzilla movie.........)
You've summed up the issue well. Different people like different movies. For instance, if I had to watch Breach again I would scream, despite the fact that it was a very plot-driven movie.
On the other hand, my list of movies I either have watched or plan to watch include GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers 2, Fast & Furious, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, all promising to be packed with action, explosions, chase scenes, etc. Because that's what I like to see.
That's why I cannot imagine how people like you could have gone to a movie centered around fights between giant robots and expected to get the same quality as Les Miserables.

Well I'm a mixture of 1, 2, and 3. I like all types of movies, even the occasional chick flick once every other three years. I've been raised in an environment where a person should widen their horizon instead of sticking to one thing. With that said, it appears that you only went to see the movie to just give it a chance. Even though for you it ended in epic failure, all statements made are more or less true. My guess is that you were just giving it a shot, am I right?vampirehunter42 wrote:My main problem with movies that spend more time and effort on making it look cool, are making us spend a lot of money for what you can now just buy on a gaming counsel.

People who expect me to conform to 'social norms'. Which don't actually make sense.
The beauracracy at NASA. We could have been at Eridani and Tau Ceti by now, if they didn't waste so much money on useless jobs. Granted, that also makes me rant about the politics of it all.
People who think they're more intelligent than me because they have a higher level of education... which is always a consequence of their greater age. Really, they can only compare my qualifications with what they had at my age. Then you have to factor in different educational styles and such...
My school. Need I say anymore?

Re: Calling all science fiction lovers
I like a lot of movies, but I agree that if the directors and the rest go out of their way for super crazy special effects, they lose the good plot and acting. A lot of movies now have to be action packed and very violent, becuase thats what the majority look for. Same goes for commedies, they have to be so over the top to make people laugh, not to mention how many peoples humours have changed. Some people would laugh at normal sort of rom-com stuff, others would wet themselves over something in one of the Scary Movies, and again some people laugh at extreme violence and pain.
Also, many people believe and it is true a lot of the time, that number 2 movies and folow ons from the first film usually get worse and worse. You can sometimes see how they throw in everything becuase they have ran out of interesting plot ideas, and the story becomes drawn. But a few do become better. For example, Rise Of The Lycans, I believe it was better than the other two, but, it was a prequel. But becuase it was the kind of film that you wont understand unless you have watched and understand the previous ones, that made it more fun and more interesting overall, for me anyway.
Indeed, the opposite for the Pirates of the Caribbean. The first one was good, second not too bad. The third however, even though I thought it was better, people think it was too long and too much over the top.

Don't get my wrong. I have my junk food side of movies as well. I just love old B movies. Bad acting, little to no plot, bad special effects and so on. But those are for the pure point of watching something that is bad. Well truth be told, I will watch a preview and read up on the plot line before I go to watch a movie. And I like to read movie reviews like Roger Ebert's if I am still questioning it. If more than 2 of those things turn me off of the movie I know it is not of my tastes. For example I am one of the few people who does not like Forrest Gump. I have watched the movie a number of times, and the only thing that got me through it was Hanks' acting. He was really great in that movie, along with most of the other actors. But the plot and story line was just too much for me. My suspension of disbelief was so horribly broken not even halfway through the movie I lost all want to even try anymore.
But as Blue Tiger posted, the target audience is what makes a movie. If the majority of the people want to see one type of movie that is what they will make.

So many minor and major things can go wrong that can quickly kill any space explorer. (I just watched something about this today) The two main worries are solar flares and micro meteorites, both can take out with little to no warning. Our moon missions have been lucky to be missed by both of these.
And I really don't think we would be out too far, Voyager 1 which is about 110.239 AU (approximately 16.49 terameters, 10.22 billion miles, or 0.0017 light years) from the Sun. Yes that is a log way, but just a baby step out of the solar system.

Now about the space exploration. I truly believe that mankind is not ready to make that leap only because of one simple fact: We know little to nothing about physics. I mean there are galaxies out there that should not even exist according to current physics laws and yet, however, there they are. Until mankind can grasp a firm understanding of physics then they are not ready for space exploration to that extreme. Let alone solar flares, micro meteorites, and warp drive.

As to the space exploration thing... Well, more about Sci-Fi then anything, but still.
As to traveling at "the speed of light." If I remember correctly, there was a footnote (or something along those lines) on Einstine's theory of relativity that stated that if something reaches or exceeds the speed of light, it's mass becomes infinite. So, technically, if someone seeking to travel the universe hits the speed of light, they would become the universe.
That is what annoys me about Sci-Fi. They have great storylines, don't get me wrong, but they really need to get all of their facts straight.

Re: Grumpy old forumers
The main problem is "real" space travel is boring. Just watch 2001 and you can learn that. Don't get my wrong it is a good movie, when you get to the movie parts that is.
But the "warp drive" may work. But we just don't have the ability to even build it yet. And it can add a loophole into the speed of light thing. Another loophole may be "wormholes", but they will take even more of a problem to use.
(But really, I just got The History Channel’s, The Universe season 3. A couple of the shows are on this subject)

I honestly think that if we achieve warp drive then space travel will be fun. Let's not even mention wormholes, dear lord, racing would be out of this world, and this solar system... literally.
