Dragons: legs?

Post by dragon queen »

This is a question that has bothered me for a long time: Do dragons have:2 back legs, 2 front legs and a pair of wings OR just 2 back legs and a pair of wings? The reason for this question is that in pictures I have seen dragons without front legs and it is as if there front legs are their wings. If you have seen the film "Reign of fire" those dragons don`t have front legs, its kind of like bats isnt it?

This is one of the problems with how people see dragons.

The four legged two winged dragon is the "standard" dragon from myth and legend. But the two legged two winged dragon is sometimes called a wyvern but it is still more or less still a dragon. So they are both "right" in the over all picture of things. I hope I helped you.

Hmm, I think I asked somethign like this when I first came here. That or somethign regarding how they walk. Anyway, I do recall someone saying how there would need to be a huge amount of muscle around the area were the wings and the forelegs join. Also there seemed to be the problem of how a dragn could move one set with out the other getting in the way. I belive it was answered with it is probaly like our hands. It would seem pretty hard to only move one finger with all the muscel, but for us it is simple as all get out. So maybe for a dragon, moving their "fore-legs" and wings seperatly is a sinche

Hmm...Im not sure which type (front legs and seperate wings or joined) is supported by what im going to say...but I know that for something to fly it needs strong chest muscles...um...even though I like to think of dragons as having seperated front legs and wings I think that it would make more sense that they don't.

well, the fact that there are hundreds of dragon personifications, both images are correct, but in case you need a standars, the 4 legged, 2 wings image is "correct"

both of those pictures you have seen are true for there are diferrent dragons for example, European dragons have 4 legs and 2 wings, wyverns have 2 legs 2 wings, ampitheres have no legs 2 wings, and knuckers have 4 legs no wings all of these are described in Dragonology by Ernest Drake. I recommend this bok to all who love dragons as i have since i was 5.

wings, arms and legs

Post by Wolf OA »

i think dragons have wings in the middle of their backs and arms like an angel (only alot bigger and with lots more teeth..duh) basically...like a big cat, with wings protuding from its back, and of course hind legs, each has its own set of muscle gruopings and each can function by its self, or in groups ( I.E. - legs and wings for swimming {uch faster then just wings, or legs} and wings and arms for fighting{in some stories dragons do not "breath" flames, but rather shoot them from there wing tips via magic and use their arms, for slashing and defending their under belly})

just my thoughts on this

If you wan to get some REAL knowledge. Try C. Branda's books. It doesn't have very many pretty pictures, but it has some interesting knowledge about dragons in spellworking.
