I think that the slassic European ones have a better shape...

However, evolutionary wise, I think that The Chinese ones suit their environment better than the European ones suit theirs. Think about it, you never hear of a samari going out to slay a dragon. It's always the knights...

that was a good movie. i think the european dragons are perfectly suited to their enviroment. its just not very many places to hide on a peninsula packed full of people.

I disagree...

Europe had VERY few people living there, compared to today. And what made the population shrink even more was the fact that the Bubonic Plague was spread through out Europe, killing one third of the people there...

However, you hear of dragons being slayed all the way up until the 1400s, even though the worse part of the plague ended in the 1200s...

Plus, very few people ventured up into the high parts of the mountains, where European dragons supposedly lived...

I know I'm going to offend some with this statement, but they would either have to be extremly big or extremely stupid to catch the attention of the humans down below in the castles...

well the chinese have a different horoscope (as u prob' know) which is decided by what year u are born instead of the western way (i.e months)

i was born in 1988 so i was born in the year of the dragon, i was born @ approx 2.00am so my shaddow is of the ox and my element is earth.

so i know this topic was of imagery of eastern dragons but i needed 2 meantion their beliefs too!
anyone want 2 know bout their chinese animal just message me! xx

Archaeology proves that eastern and western dragons are the same creatures. The ancient depictions of Chines dragons show them with normal porportioned bodies, must like western ones. They aslo have small wings like depictions of western dragons.

As people became more modern, dragons were not allowed to be so cnspicuous, so after they were no longer seen, both eastern and western dragons changed their look as people perceived them differently in their artwork.

No knight or samurai ever killed a dragon. When a dragon left an area, the first clever warrior who realized it was gone, invented a tale that it drove the dragon away. (He couldn't way he killed it becasue there was never a dragon body found). But over the years, these tales became more embellished, and eventually, hundreds of years later, people believed the warrior killed a dragon, and everyone just forgot where the body lay.

But most of the time, the stories were completely made up. For example, there was NEVER a dragon connected with St. George, until a writer invented the story almost a 1000 years after George's death!

But people wanted to believe dragonslaying stories, because everyone aparently saw, and were terrified of dragons.

But there fears were largely unfounded for dragons are only allowed to devour the wicked. The Church did not want this revealed as they would lose much of their power, so invented stories that the highest of heavenly creatures, were demons and devils.

To illustrate my point, this is an over 2000 year old bronze sculpture of a Chinese dragon, from the time legends and histories stated dragons interrelated with people, taught them things, were fed and tended in temples and even advised the emperior. And the interesting thing is that this dragon is almost identical to the western and middle eastern dragons, such as the one who guarded the sacred trees, and offered Adam eternal life in the original Sumerian story, on which Adam and Eve and the Serpent was based. But after retelling the story as an oral tradition for over a 1000 years, the Benificent Cherub-dragon is tranformed into an evil creature who deceives the humans, and has his legs and wings taken away to become the first snake. Silly, but that's what can happen to a story after it is told around the campire of shepherds after about a million times.

This is a dead thread, but as I am not a mod I cannot lock it so I will add my two cents.

Chinese dragons possibly flick their bodies so they go flying up into the air. They may have lost their wings as they did not need to fly to escape humans trying to kill them.

No dragon of the past would fear being killed by a human, that is wishful human thinking, and the stuff of fairy tales. They "lost" their wings, because in more modern times they were not allowed to be seen by mankind, so people "forgot" what they really looked like. That is why the later Chinese dragons look so fanciful and a composite of many different creatures. They remembered they flew, but forgot that they needed wings to do so, and added other things that make Chinese dragons seem so unrealistic.

Bottom line, Eastern and Western dragons are the very same creatures. If a western dragon flies to China he becomes an eastern dragon, that's it.

It is possible that the dragons in China never bothered to intimidate wicked humans for human sacrifices like in Europe, because they had all the babies they'd ever want to eat in China. No, the Chinese didn't intentionally feed them their babies, but it is common knowledge that for centuries, right up to modern times that the Chinese left unwanted babies on trash heaps outside of cities. In a large city, even in ancient times, there will be a lot of babies every night. So now you know why Chinese dragons seem to be "nicer" than "Western" ones. A well-fed dragon is a friendly dragon.
