Actually...not even that. Reproduction.
It was all about getting all dem little babies out there into the world (still is). Breathing, or actually, respiration, was just the side function, that allowed you to keep breeding.

No who I am talking about had came across an enchanted object that endowed him with the spirit.... but the soul had decayed while traped within the object so it fused with his soul which had also been damaged by the intensity of the Dragon Magic......

'Possessed' comes to mind. 'Other-kin' comes to mind. 'Halfling'...brings up hobbits.
