Occasionally I'm lucky and I do see someone I know, but then they are usually preoccupied, and don't notice me.

Yelliong, waving, even unobtrusive poking: Easily ignored. But if you poked them obtrusively, they usually will pay attention. Wether that'll be 'good' attention or not remains to be seen.
