Mia: When a mother cat is teaching her young to hunt, she herself catches small things (mice, rabbits, squirrels) and brings them back alive. She releases the catch by her kittens and lets them hunt and kill it.

exactly.Female felines,(rymes?) particularily in prides,Always leave a young adult to babysit the cubs while the rest hunt.Every mammal that has young does this and will fight to the death to protect their babies.Not just wolves.And don't get me wrong,I love wolves as much as cats and i'm a sucker for both
Only reptiles (but not crocodiles) and fish leave their young to fend for themselves after they hatch.

Actually, I once heard there was a type of snake that cared for its young....

Ive heard of that snake too and i think its native to africa or austrailia although im not sure where it lives.
