Responding to the question 'What's corrective surgery?'

Corrective surgery is what is done to people who are born with 'abnormal' body parts and such like (tails, fins), hermaphrodites, and other such people.

What do you think? Personally I find it distasteful, as the brain will not change after the surgery and can lead to mental health issues later.

It should only be used to prevent life-threatening conditions but as with a lot of these things each case should be looked at on its merits and dangers.

I'm sorry, I didn't make the distinction between Aesthetic and Functional (probably not the correc term for the latter but I don't know the correct one.) Functional would be for, say, a Cleft Palate, whereas Aesthetic would be tails and such like. Parents wanting so-called 'normal' children.

I'd put Hermaphrodites in this category because not having a defined sex *should* not impede you through life. The parents choosing the sex might choose a different sex to the persons actual brain, leading to depression, suicide, and other mental health issuesin later life.

The one I'm talking about is Aesthetic.

In which case I voted a bit too soon. I'm not sure if I'd want to keep an aesthetic abnormalty. I'm also not sure how I would react to meeting such a person but I believe a person has his/her own right to chose whether or not to have the abnormalty removed.

Is there a way to change my choice in the poll by any chance?

I don't think so. Maybe vote again twice on the one you wanted to cancel out?

You saw what I posted on this. The "cat people" and "lizardman" are ok to look at, but then you have to really think what made them do this. But most of them are able to live their own lives well enough, I don't know why they just make a costume like most normal Furies do.

In the case of tails and fins, I think they should be kept, until the child chooses otherwise. For all we know it could be the next step in human evolution.

And wings! Don't forget wings.

Sometimes I get the creepy feeling I should have wings, like when people who have had an arm amputated still feel that they have the arm still attached. I wonder if I was born with wings, and had them taken off by sureons. Such - what's the opposite term to defect - could be more common than thought, because they are soon covered up.

Some would call it a step backwards, though.

Remember this type of stuff is not like getting a hair cut or changing hair color, which can regrow or be changed again. It is not even like a body piercing, that can be taken off and heal. And it is worse than a tattoo. A tattoo can even be removed without a huge amount of damage. But adding a wing or something like that is extremely permeate. What do you plan to do in a year or so after the adding you tire of the wings?

I would say that functional surgery is pretty much a no-brainer. As for cosmetic surgery, personally, I think unless it does impair the ability to perform an activity (or disfiguring), then it should be left that way until the kid can make his own mind on the subject. For example, webbed feet is an irrelevant condition as most people could be born in just one big flat toe and they wouldn't see any difference. Gender reassignment is particularly problematic as it is in a way coupled with an orientation reassignment. Some people even push the concept a notch further when performing surgery on babies for no medical reason, but I think they are clearly crossing an ethical line in those cases.

However, let's be frank here. Kids are surprisingly resourceful in mocking other kids for things as trivial as having the wrong brand name on t-shirt and adults aren't better (examples abound). So this needs to be taken in consideration even for things as biologically trivial as having webbed toes.

My godbrother has webbed toes. But he is near 7ft so I don't think people joke at him about it.

I still think no in most cases, but there are some cases which will be better for their health. Like the "mermaid" babies, or conjoined twins.

If it's hazardous to your health or if it's just hard to live your life with it. Just as an example, it could be painful to sit in a lot of chairs just because you had a little two-inch tail.

Yeah, but the kid might have wanted to take pride in his individuality and just sit on the floor cross-legged instead of a painful chair.

but may i point out that in school, you are forced to sit in chairs, trust me i try everyday to sit in other places.

But you can always complain about the school doing that if you have a tail. Child cruelty.

that too, you could also try and get out of big tests, but i think that only works with brain injuries, so no luck there. never mind.
