World of the Dead

Danae's Journal
It started in Europe... At least, that's what we think. It was all so confusing, so chaotic. When we saw the first news stories, everyone laughed. No one believed them.

Then it spread. Jonah says it was probably an infected passenger on a transatlantic flight. I believe him; he used to be a doctor or something. Before it came...
The virus quickly infected thousands. Overnight, the cities of New York, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco became killing fields. The military was mobilized, but to no avail. Bit by bit over the next few months, the outbreak slaughtered most of the last vestiges of humanity.

Now, the last survivors are holed up in scattered outposts across the Earth, boarded in as they attempt to survive. Scientists look for a cure, the military plans the offensive, and civilians pray for their lives.

And the dead up and rise, clawing through makeshift barricades to reclaim this world as their own.

An expedition is being put together. The mission: cross through miles of zombie-infested territory. Retrieve a genetically engineered bacterial agent from an undisclosed laboratory. Transport the sample to NORAD aerodispersion facilities for global release. Return to Philadelphia to report.

Name: Jonah Hale
Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Forensic Specialist/CSI
Post-Outbreak Occupation: Field Medic
Appearance: Tall, slender, short black hair, brown eyes, beat-up gray jacket, green T-shirt, jeans, boots.
Weapons: .22 Rimfire bolt-action rifle w/ Hunter's scope, .357 Colt Python revolver, Combat knife.

Notes:
* The zombies and general idea taken from the Zombie Survival Guide.
* Keep in mind, you won't be able to carry much ammo, and will have trouble finding it for military grade weapons.
* This is an apocalypse, and the Solanum virus has a 100% fatality/conversion rate. NO other races, NO magic, NO superhuman powers, and NO virus survivors.

Dragonrider, that is not existing technology, else the US government would be all over it, using it for their own troops. Drakes, same goes for you.

I'm waiting to see if Marik gets back online before I start the D&D RP. Give him bout another week.

That allot of weapons! And the melee thing was my idea.

ok here is my second char.

Name: (unknown) likes to be called Drakel

Pre- occupation: Is considered to be the best melee combatant in the world after training His whole life with only the best of fighters. He was richer than most would consider but no one knows him.

POST- occupation: his own home was a sanctuary to most of the survivors yet he and a few friends were able to stop an army of zombies before they hit the other survivors. Sadly he was the only one out of all his old friends to survive and he swore to undo what has been done.

Weapons: a nice handmade long sword (kind of like Azrivel’s) and a lot of knifes (no one has a clue how many.)

(how is this char falconer?)

Sorry drakes but in falconers description it kinda favors melee over ammo and so i decided to go with martial artist not because you wanted to do melee but because the rp favors them and i like the Japanese martial arts :D

Falconer, this is set sometime *in the future*, right? If I coulf give you links demonstrating that some of the engineering I mentioned is doable with today's technology, would it be allowed?

@Drakes & Ire: The zombies here spread the infection through a bite - using melee primarily is a great way to die. Said zombies can only be dispatched by a headshot, so any melee weapons would have to be capable of one-hit decapitation or cranial penetration. Also, consider how hard it would be to get your hands on Japanese battle-ready martial weapons- hence why my character has a couple of weapons that are widely found, with common ammo. Dragonrider also got that down pat - M4 carbines use the 5.56x45mm standard NATO rifle round, which could be found in any military armory; and combat knives can be found in any Walmart.

@Drakes: Odds are, most of the rich people's money would have been tied up in stocks or at the bank, so it would be as good as gone in a Class-4 (global) outbreak. Also, you only need 1-2 knives, as throwing them is pointless and you only have the two hands.

@Ire: I like the Luger, it's a good survival weapon. The katana and Su-yari, though, those would be difficult to find. Though the Yari looks like it was designed for zombie killing 8) . If you really like the idea of a sword-style weapon, consider taking a machete- easy to find, and highly durable.

@Dragonrider: The date is in the future, yes, but after an extended outbreak which is set to begin in 2010 - only a few months from now. Any technology would have to exist now, right this very minute. As for weapons, like I noted, the M4 is an excellent weapon - just be sure it's set to semiautomatic or 3-round burst, not full auto.

General note: The idea is to mostly avoid conflict, with quick, silent kills when possible. Weapon choices should make sense. Ask yourself:
Do I have this weapon already (in real life)? Could I get one easily/legally?
How well does this weapon perform? What are its limitations, i.e. range, penetration, accuracy, noise, weight/commonality of ammo?
Would my character know how to use one? (i.e. a computer technician would be useless with an M16, a hunter couldn't use a katana, a soldier wouldn't know what to do with a bolas)

What I intended to communicate is that ammo will be heavy, so you'll need to be able to replenish supplies in the field.

Some weapon ideas:
Any .22 Rimfire weapons. Common and lightweight ammo, straightforward and easy to use.
M4 Carbine: Any military base would stock ammo for it; impressive penetrative power, accurate enough for headshots.
AR-15: Semiauto rifle variant of the M16; can be chambered for the .223 Remington rifle round, used in hunting and carried in many hunting and gun stores.
AK-47: Illegal, but also easy to obtain on the black market. A rather powerful assault rifle.
Glock 17/19/34: A series of pistols that use the common 9x19mm Parabellum rounds, with decent penetration.

Ok Falconer just pointing out that i specifically created my characters background (hence the Asian martial arts teacher who had mastered all known Japanese martial arts) so that he would have owned those weapons even before the outbreak and the katana is much sharper than a machete i've seen one slice threw a lot of thick stuff very easily and still cut a piece of paper perfectly

Drakel is pretty much rich so he would be able to pay for the training and the weapon. so yah. (he now has no $$ after sending alot of survivers inside his home to save them but failed them all. RIP!)

@Drakes: There's still the question of inclination. Why would a rich person receive martial arts training? A history of conflict, an old nemesis?

Also, Drakes, Ire, your characters are too similar. One or both of you need to change them. Feel free to discuss that via PM.

Some ppl take kung fu lessons for no reason at all other than it is fun in their eyes. Why can’t my char? I guess it would kind of be the same for my char.

Also If they really are that similar than I guess adding personality would be needed to change that.(just a thought because personality douse go a long way.)

Ok me and drakes have talked about it and we decided to further our background and drakes will add more of an arsenal to his character but still keeps his sword and i will keep the melee combat to a minimum and mainly with the Su-yari

K I changed his post occupation to put more of a unique situation behind him and to give him more motivation for even joining the group

Name: Daichi Ikeda

Race: Japanese

Pre Occupation: Martial arts instructor after mastering all martial arts known to Asia including martial arts using weapons

Post Occupation: Found out that most of his family died when the outbreak occurred and vowed to try and find them and help anyone he can on the way he knew that the expedition would be going near where some family might still be alive so he joined to see if he could find them and to help put this virus away because it had taken too many lives already

Appearance: Average height and dark blue hair almost black and dark eyes built very slim but much stronger than he appears

Weapons: Katana, and a Su-yari (japanese straight spear) and a CZ P07 DUTY cal. 9mm Luger, polymer frame, black polycoat with three cases of reloads (i mean three full reloads not huge cases) i would say he has about 200 hundred bullets

@Ire: Hmmm a personal connection to the mission, nice.

OK, looks good. Since you both have 9mm handguns, you will be able to share ammo with each other. Drakes, you can also share ammo with Dragonrider. Now I know who to kill off... jk

We just need one more person and then we can start.

@Dragonrider: ..............................................................fine. Do keep in mind, the Solanum virus is transmitted via bodily fluids, so if a zombie's blood or saliva gets in an open wound, advanced healing won't help. Immediate bandaging of injuries is still a priority.

@dragonmaster: What kind of machine gun? Submachine gun, assault rifle, machine pistol? The weapon needs to be capable of delivering headshots. Also:
The Zombie Survival Guide wrote:Question: What could be better than hurling a hand grenade at a mass of approaching zombies? Answer: almost anything. Anti-personnel explosives kill mainly by shrapnel, metal shards tearing through vital organs. As this will not affect zombies, and the chances of shrapnel penetrating the skull is slim, grenades, bombs, and other explosive tools are inefficient weapons.
Explosives can still be used to scatter undead mobs, blast through doors, or bring down ceilings. Additionally, your C4 is probably how we'll get into the research building.

16 inches... *measures with hands* perfect.
